This course will benefit those who have little or no experience of US GAAP, and who are in need of a basic understanding of the differences between US GAAP and UK GAAP.

Course content

Despite having a great deal of common purpose and common concepts, the accounting principles in Europe and the US can lead to markedly different financial statements. Those dealing with US parent or subsidiary organisations require an understanding of the key differences between US and UK GAAP.

This introductory course provides an overview of the workings of US GAAP and highlights the significant differences between accounting principles followed in the US and in the UK. The US regulatory background is outlined, together with specific matters affecting the balance sheet, the income statement and key disclosures.

Learning outcomes include obtaining a greater understanding of:

• The US regulatory environment
• The format and contents of financial statements under US GAAP
• Commonly encountered balance sheet issues
• Commonly encountered income statement issues
• Disclosure issues
• The ‘roadmap’ for convergence between IFRS and US GAAP

Please note that some of the more complex standards are not covered during the introductory day. These standards are covered in US GAAP - Advanced.
