Develop interpersonal skills for your professional success

Introduction

The skills of a Senior Lawyer must evolve to keep pace with changes in professional and client demands and expectations. Technical excellence, fee earning and robust financial management are as important as ever but Senior Lawyers need to develop more comprehensive and wide ranging skills to allow them to improve their performance, realise their potential and capitalise on development and promotion opportunities.

The focus of Associate to Partner is to create or expand such skills by building the attributes and values which enable individuals both to flourish independently and to create positive, collaborative and co-operative relationships in the workplace.

The programme explores five themes, building up from a basic understanding of psychological concepts on a step-by-step basis.

Who should attend?

Associate to Partner is a skills development programme for lawyers with between 3 and 6 years PQE. The programme aims to develop performance and realise potential in Senior Lawyers, using theory and studies drawn from psychological science and developmental processes.

Module 3: Inside Out

A Senior Lawyer must build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and clients and to command their respect. Our ability to create these relationships and command such respect is influenced by perception of our authority, presence and impact.

What makes us successful communicators with our colleagues and clients?

This one-day course builds upon the two previous ones, by examining how we present and project ourselves and our organisation effectively and persuasively to others. You will deliver presentations using the concepts discussed during the day.

Session 1: Self-presentation and first impressions

Most of us understand that first impressions are critical. This session will help you to:

    • Recognise the motives behind different types of self-presentation
    • Understand why negative first impressions can be difficult to overcome, and how to avoid making them
    • Appreciate how to create positive first impressions – and maintain them – with conversation, eye contact, gesture and stance
    • Understand why what you don’t say (particularly about yourself and your organisation) is as important as what you do

    Session 2: Influence and persuasiveness

Changing our own minds can be difficult, but influencing others perhaps even more so. This session will help you to:

    • Understand the elements of three models of influence
    • Improve your impact as a communicator and influencer
    • Use words and linguistic style to become more persuasive
    • Recognise why empathy and understanding of others’ positions is important
    • Work effectively with a hostile or challenging audience
    • Develop your own style of ethical influence

Session 3: Presenting yourself and your firm

Fear of public speaking is common and even those who are confident in this area can learn how to become more effective and persuasive. This session will help you to:

    • Understand the physiological and psychological basis for nerves
    • Learn how to live with and conquer nerves and to generate and project confidence
    • Appreciate the importance of planning, rehearsal and debriefing
    • Develop your own personal style
    • Use techniques to increase the persuasive power of your presentations
    • Projecting authority, presence and impact in presentations

Module 1: Mind Matters
Module 2: Working Within
Module 4: Inspiring Others - Delegation & Feedback
Module 5: Inspiring Others - Coaching & Mentoring

"A CPD certificate of completion will be provided by BPP Professional Education Limited upon request, following attendance."
