Develop interpersonal skills for your professional success

Introduction

The skills of a Senior Lawyer must evolve to keep pace with changes in professional and client demands and expectations. Technical excellence, fee earning and robust financial management are as important as ever but Senior Lawyers need to develop more comprehensive and wide ranging skills to allow them to improve their performance, realise their potential and capitalise on development and promotion opportunities.

The focus of Associate to Partner is to create or expand such skills by building the attributes and values which enable individuals both to flourish independently and to create positive, collaborative and co-operative relationships in the workplace.

The programme explores five themes, building up from a basic understanding of psychological concepts on a step-by-step basis.

Who should attend?

Associate to Partner is a skills development programme for lawyers with between 3 and 6 years PQE. The programme aims to develop performance and realise potential in Senior Lawyers, using theory and studies drawn from psychological science and developmental processes.

Module 1: Mind Matters

The Senior Lawyer must demonstrate the ability to reason logically and the capacity and resilience to make high impact decisions. Appreciation of these skills will increase their ability to deliver improved performance and to achieve realisation of potential.

How can we think more effectively, evaluate evidence and make decisions?

This one-day course provides a fundamental introduction to the workings of the brain and mind and explores how we think and why we can make errors when we do. This leads on to decision making, and concludes with a consideration of what motivates us to perform well and thereby increase confidence and self-esteem.

Session 1: What’s in your mind?

The structures and functioning of the brain are complex and the science is constantly developing. A very basic introduction is necessary to set the scene for the sessions which follow. This session helps you to:

    • Understand the structures and functioning of the brain
    • Become aware of how the systems within the brain interact
    • Recognise how neural pathways develop and help to form habitual behaviour
    • Appreciate the importance of mirror neurons in understanding others

Session 2: How do you think?

Most of us like to think we are rational and in control of our own thoughts. This session helps you to:

    • Recognise, and therefore try to avoid, some of the most common pitfalls in thinking
    • Appreciate how unconscious beliefs and stereotypical thinking affect us and others
    • Understand how we strive for cognitive constancy and what this means for us
    • Appreciate normal human responses to the suggestion that we may be wrong
    • Understand how emotion interacts with reasoning
    • Consider the role of intuition and somatic markers in decision making
    • Recognise the ways in which we make decisions and evaluate evidence
    • Develop techniques to enable effective decision making and avoid common pitfalls

Session 3: What do you think about your work and how you perform it?

Thoughts and attitudes about work and our performance contribute to how we feel about ourselves as professionals. This section helps you to:

    • Recognise the importance of autonomy, mastery, purpose and flow
    • Understand the benefits and costs of high self-esteem
    • Learn how to strengthen your self-control and willpower
    • Appreciate how to achieve healthy self-esteem
    • Design strategies to create and maintain confidence in your performance

Module 2: Working Within
Module 3: Inside Out
Module 4: Inspiring Others - Delegation & Feedback
Module 5: Inspiring Others - Coaching & Mentoring

"A CPD certificate of completion will be provided by BPP Professional Education Limited upon request, following attendance."
