This course will be of benefit to practitioners, in-house legal advisors, managers or HR professionals with no or limited employment law knowledge, who wish to gain a basic grounding in discrimination law as it applies to the employment sphere. The course is the ideal partner to Employment Law – An Introduction: Rights and Obligations.
Overview
You will be given an overview of the new landscape of discrimination law (under the Equality Act 2020) and appreciate its impact before, during and after the employment relationship by use of interactive practical examples. You will gain a balanced appreciation of the main concepts, rights and remedies in discrimination law enabling you to advise on discrimination issues with confidence.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Define the Protected Characteristics (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation)
- Describe the different types of prohibited conduct: including;
- Direct discrimination
- Indirect discrimination
- Harassment
- Victimisation
- Set out in broad terms the requirements of the Equality Act 2020 concerning discrimination in employment.
- Appreciate the limited nature of defences to discrimination claims and the relevant tests to be applied.
- Describe the different remedies available to successful claimants in a discrimination case
