Criminal Advocacy - The Youth Court
Course Level
Intermediate
Delegates
This course will be of immense benefit to anyone undertaking advocacy in the youth court.
Overview
The advocacy skills in the youth court are different to those required in the adult court. You need to be able to address the court on concepts that don’t even apply in the adult court. If you go to the youth court rarely or are about to embark upon going then this course is for you. It will bring you completely up to date with current legislation and case-law applicable to your advocacy in the youth courts.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Make representations (whether prosecution or defence) on the proposed venue for a serious and grave crime
- Make representations (whether prosecution or defence) on whether the youth should be bailed or remanded into youth detention accommodation
- Address the court and deal effectively with all of the case management issues once a not guilty plea has been entered
- Make an application for an adjournment
- Deal with the issue of whether or not the youth is or is not a ‘persistent offender’ in law
- Present a plea in mitigation in the youth court
- Address the court on all of the various disposals available to it when dealing with the youth
- Understand and appreciate the crucial importance of age when addressing the court
- Address the magistrates’ in open court on the above issues, if you are their legal adviser
"A CPD certificate of completion will be provided by BPP Professional Education Limited upon request, following attendance."
