This course will be of benefit to trainees, newly qualified staff, or those who seek to get a better understanding of the statutory and case law developments in both private and public law, children law, as well as becoming more effective in drafting of core documents, and advocacy in children law.

Overview

You will have the opportunity to draft documents and to be guided towards becoming more confident in drafting and conducting effective advocacy before the courts. You will have the opportunity to practice some advocacy in a relaxed and friendly environment, which will aid in building you confidence and fee earning capacity.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

DAY ONE

• Outline the essentials of parental responsibility and types of orders in private and public children law
• Describe the purpose of Pre-proceedings work and protocols
• Define the key legal issues in name change, religion and removal out of the country
• Explain the difference between special guardianship and placement orders
• Understand care and supervision orders
• Understand recovery orders and enforcement of orders
• Deal with emergencies
• Summarise key developments in case law and statutory developments

DAY TWO

• Apply for orders, and be aware of the various forms
• Draft documents in private and public law cases
• Draft statements, chronologies, case summaries and position statements
• Draft threshold documents, responses and skeleton arguments
• Demonstrate increased confidence in advocacy before the Family proceedings courts and County/ High courts
• Understand advocacy at directions hearings and contested hearings
