Road Traffic Law - A Practical Guide

Course level

Intermediate

Delegates

This ever popular course has been running for a number of years now. Whether you're a specialist in road traffic law or someone coming to it for the first time you are going to get a lot out of the day.

Overview

The emphasis is very much on the word ‘practical’. This course is all about such things as deciding whether or not your client is a totter and what the implications are. Alternatively it might be that the client has failed to provide a specimen at the police station or it's his second drink drive offence. He needs sound practical advice as to what to do and, perhaps more importantly, what the court are going to do with him.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand those practical sections of the Road Traffic Offenders Act relating to penalty points
  • Understand those equally unfathomable sections relating to periods of disqualification from driving
  • Give sound practical advice as to what to do for the best with the probationary driver who is about to get six points
  • Advise a client as to how he may go about seeking early removal of the disqualification
  • Appreciate the legal distinction between an ‘exceptional hardship’ argument and ‘special reasons’
  • Advise, with some confidence, in the areas of alcohol and drugs
  • Spot the client who is merely ‘in charge’ as opposed to ‘attempting to drive’ – important as the latter carries a mandatory disqualification whilst the former carries points
  • Make valid requests to the Crown Prosecution Service for more information, know what you're asking for, what you're entitled to and how you can use it
  • Explain to the client in simple terms precisely what ‘disqualification until re-test’ means
  • Advise on defences – did you know that driving whilst disqualified must take place on a road rather than a public place?

    • "A CPD certificate of completion will be provided by BPP Professional Education Limited upon request, following attendance."
