This course will be of benefit to in-house lawyers who are less than 3 years qualified. All solicitors must take Management Course Stage One between their date of admission and the end of their third CPD year.

Overview

This MCS1 course is designed specifically for in-house lawyers whether in the public sector or industry. The aim of the course is to give you an introduction to the management issues relevant to an in-house department and the associated personal management skills.

Topics covered on this course will include

• The different possible purposes and roles of an in-house department
• The Sherwood ‘leadership, control, service’ model
• Business risk management and legal risk management
• The driving forces for an in-house team
• The requirements of the in-house client and providing a quality service
• Using the technique of ‘service mapping’
• Effective communication; the skills of listening and influencing
• Managing people (and being managed)
